Around 200 people gathered early this morning at the Treble Cone Skifield near Wanaka in the South Island, for the official ceremony welcoming the Māori New Year, Matariki.

The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Christopher Luxon was in attendance with other Government Ministers. This is an important time for us to refelct and remember those who have passed on, Luxon said.

This year’s theme for Matariki is, Heri Kai, or the Feast of Matariki. The theme is a call for people to think about food, as well as the environment from which it was produced. There are many ceremonies and events being held in many areas of the country today.
