Since our founding in 1992, SCR has stood as a cultural and community cornerstone—dedicated to preserving the Samoan language, identity, and values while empowering our people through media.
Our Vision & Mission
Vision: To be the leader in Sāmoan broadcasting in New Zealand (‘Ina ‘ia ta’itā’ia Fa’asalalauga Fa’a-Sāmoa ‘i Niu Sila)
Mission: To entertain, educate, inform, forewarn, and culturally and spiritually grow Sāmoans living in New Zealand through the use of their language.
Our Story
Sāmoa Capital Radio began in 1991 with short-form Samoan programming in Wellington, aimed at helping Samoan migrants stay connected to their language and heritage. On 29 June 1992, SCR was officially launched by New Zealand’s then Deputy Prime Minister Don McKinnon, with a live phone address by Samoa’s then Prime Minister Tofilau Eti Alesana—speaking from Apia during what was a Sunday morning in Samoa.
This historic event marked the birth of New Zealand’s first Pacific Island radio station, giving Samoans their own dedicated media voice and platform for identity, culture, and connection.
Broadcasting Journey
SCR broadcast on the 783AM frequency from 1992 to 2017, reaching communities across the lower North Island and upper South Island—from Taupō to Christchurch. In 2017, we moved to 106.1FM in the Wellington region via Wellington Access Radio, offering enhanced clarity and accessibility for our core audiences.
Today, we broadcast:
- On 106.1FM in Wellington
- On Facebook Live with 41,000+ followers
- Via YouTube with 10,000+ subscribers
- Through streaming platforms connecting audiences worldwide
