The Government of Samoa, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Japan, proudly marks a significant milestone in the enhancement of health services and the promotion of sustainable transport with the official handover of an electric truck and charger to support the TTM Hospital Oxygen Plant operations.

The official ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Aliona Niculita, Resident Representative of the UNDP Samoa Country Office, His Excellency Ryotaro Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to Samoa, Honorable Olo Fiti Vaai – Hon. Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, distinguished guests, and development partners.

In his remarks, a representative of the Government of Samoa, Honorable Olo Fiti Vaai – Minister of Works Transport and Infrastructure expressed deep gratitude and pride in receiving the first-ever electric truck specifically manufactured and reconfigured to meet the needs of the Ministry of Health.

The vehicle will play a critical role in the administration of the TTM Hospital Oxygen Plant and the distribution of oxygen cylinders to health facilities across both Upolu and Savai’i.

This electric truck is one of the electric vehicles procured under the Climate Action Pathways for Island Transport (CAP-IT) project, implemented by the Government of Samoa under the leadership of the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, in close collaboration with UNDP and generously funded by the Government of Japan.

The representative highlighted the environmental and economic advantages of electric vehicles in health service delivery, particularly their role in reducing emissions, lowering operational costs, and improving air quality in operational zones.

The delivery of this specialized electric truck demonstrates Samoa’s steadfast commitment to its national development goals under the Pathway for the Development of Samoa 2021–2026, with an emphasis on decarbonization and strengthened health service provision.
