Sāmoa joined New Zealand in commemorating the 185th anniversary of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi, with a reception hosted by the New Zealand High Commissioner, H.E. Si’alei Van Toor. The event, held at Taumeasina Island Resort last Friday (7 Feb 2025), was attended by a distinguished gathering, including Sāmoa’s Prime Minister, Honourable Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, alongside members of government, the judiciary, and the diplomatic corps.
Prime Minister Mata’afa extended warm congratulations on behalf of the Government and People of Sāmoa, acknowledging the Treaty’s significance to New Zealand’s history, national unity, and cultural richness. She noted the global celebrations taking place and the importance of reflecting on shared values and partnerships.
A highlight of the evening was a cultural performance by Tauranga’s Kapa Haka group, Te Paringa Tai, who earlier in the day captivated the Samoan public with a vibrant display of songs and dances at Matagialalua Friendship Park. Their presence showcased the deep cultural ties between the two nations.
Prime Minister Mata’afa emphasized Sāmoa and New Zealand’s longstanding and unique friendship, underscored by the Treaty of Friendship. She spoke of the high-level exchanges between leaders, ministers, and parliamentarians, reflecting the enduring strength of bilateral relations. She also raised the ongoing discussions about easing short-term travel between the two countries, recognizing the strong familial and business ties that bind Samoans and New Zealanders together.
Reflecting on the successful hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sāmoa last October, Prime Minister Mata’afa expressed appreciation for New Zealand’s significant contributions. She acknowledged New Zealand’s support in bridging capacity gaps and ensuring the event’s success, which in turn elevated Sāmoa’s standing as a capable host for future international gatherings.
The reaffirmation of bilateral relations was highlighted through the 2024 Statement of Partnership – O le Fogavaa e Tasi, which outlines key areas of cooperation, including security, climate resilience, and economic growth. The Prime Minister also recognized New Zealand’s trust in Sāmoa’s governance systems, demonstrated by its continued financial support under the Joint Policy Action Matrix.
Additionally, Prime Minister Mata’afa commended the collaborative efforts between Sāmoa and New Zealand in environmental conservation, particularly through Operation Resolution for the HMNZS Manawanui. This initiative, aimed at removing fuel and pollutants from the site, underscores the shared commitment to preserving the marine and coastal environment, which is vital to local communities.
In closing, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Sāmoa’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with New Zealand for the mutual benefit of both nations. She invited guests to raise a toast to the unity and prosperity of New Zealand, celebrating the enduring ties between the two countries.
