Rheumatic fever is a serious illness, which in New Zealand most often affects Maori and Pacific children and young adults, aged 4–19 years.
Sore throat clinics
Because rheumatic fever starts with a sore throat, it’s important that your child’s sore throats get checked. If your child is Maori or Pacific, is aged four and above, and has a sore throat, please get it checked straight away.
The Quit Group (which operates as Quitline) is an incorporated charitable trust that grew out of the national Quitline, established in 1999. We are committed to helping all New Zealanders quit smoking, with a particular focus on Maori, Pacific peoples and pregnant woman. Our free services are funded by the Ministry of Health.
HPA is working with the Ministry of Health Rheumatic Fever Prevention Programme (RFPP) to raise awareness of rheumatic fever and its link to sore throats, particularly in priority populations.
