The Samoa Police, Prisons & Corrections Services is pleased to mark the completion of the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) short course on the 10th of April 2026, with certificates presented to inmates, and the official handover of inclusive infrastructure enhancements at Tanumalala Prisons. These initiatives were delivered in partnership with the Australian Government through Pacific Australia Skills.

The infrastructure enhancements are already improving safety, accessibility and daily operations for staff, visitors and community members engaging with corrections services. The upgrades reflect locally identified priorities and support more orderly, inclusive, and dignified service delivery.

Assistant Commissioner Motunuu Teofilo Mikaele, who oversees Prisons and Corrections Services, said the enhancements respond directly to operational needs identified by frontline staff.

The inclusive infrastructure enhancements support safer working conditions for corrections officers and improve equitable access for visitors, including people with disabilities, children, women, older persons and others who may face barriers when accessing prison services.

The event also highlighted the role of Pacific Australia Skills in supporting skills development within the corrections system, contributing to inmate rehabilitation and reintegration following the completion of sentences at Tanumalala Prisons. This aligns with SPPCS’s commitment to building employability, personal responsibility and positive community outcomes, while helping to reduce reoffending.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Australian High Commissioner to Samoa, Mr. Simon Dawkins, acknowledged the strength of collaboration between Samoa and Australia.

The Tanumalala Prisons enhancements form part of SPPCS’s broader engagement with partners to strengthen safety, accessibility and service delivery across policing, prisons, and corrections, while building national workforce capability.
