Fourteen new community initiatives have been launched across Samoa under the Samoa CARES program.

This is a strategic effort supported by the United Nations Development Programme’s Global Environment Facility Small Grants Program (U.N.D.P. G.E.F.-S.G.P.).

This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Australian High Commission and Samoa’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and aims to bolster community resilience through environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods.

The selected projects encompass a variety of impactful activities, including solar light installations, freshwater pool restorations, biogas systems, and water management.

These endeavours focus on sustainable fisheries and agriculture, empowering communities to adapt effectively to challenges of climate change.

The grants aim to foster environmental stewardship while promoting inclusive development, ensuring that all community members benefit from these initiatives.

Grant award ceremonies took place in Upolu on April, Wednesday 1 and in Savaii on April, Tuesday 7, 2026.

Notably, the events featured the inaugural Samoa CARES Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (G.E.D.S.) Workshops.

These workshops gathered grantees to raise awareness of G.E.D.S.I. principles, emphasising the importance of inclusive participation.

Facilitator Ofusina Toamua highlighted Samoa’s cultural values, referencing the saying “O Samoa ua uma ona tofi,” to stress the importance of locally led, culturally grounded approaches.

Participants learned practical tools to understand community needs and developed action plans to ensure inclusivity in project implementation.

Australian High Commissioner, H.E. Will Robinson, underscored the significance of inclusive climate action.

“Climate change does not affect everyone equally,” he said.

“Women, people with disabilities, the elderly and youth often suffer its impacts most acutely.”

He added that, these groups also possess vital knowledge and leadership possible to enhance community resilience and innovation.

Deputy Resident Representative of the UNDP Multi-Country Office, Paolo Dalla Stella, highlighted the vital role of the grants.

“These financial supports are essential for assisting Samoa’s most vulnerable communities and contribute to strengthening the local economy,” she said.

With over two decades of impactful support, the U.N.D.P. G.E.F. Grants Program continues to empower Samoa’s communities, fostering sustainable development and resilience amid climate challenges.
